Nearly a Quarter of Retail Employers Rate Their Organization’s Employee Morale as Low, Finds New WorkInRetail.com Survey

November 18, 2009

WIR Bloggers,

CHICAGO, November 17, 2009 – Retail workers have navigated increased workloads, longer hours and strained resources during this recession. Some of these challenges have taken their toll on workplace morale. A new WorkinRetail.com survey of more than 290 retail employers reveals that nearly a quarter (23 percent) rate their organization’s current employee morale as low. Additionally, 42 percent of retail workers, the highest of all industries surveyed, report that they have had difficulty staying motivated at work in the last year and more than a quarter (28 percent) do not feel loyal to their current employer. The survey was conducted between August 20 and September 9, 2009.

“Low morale can have a significant impact on worker productivity and overall store results,” said Ben Jablow, managing director of WorkinRetail.com, CareerBuilder’s retail jobs site. “As retailers enter the busy holiday season, they are using a variety of tactics to proactively manage low morale levels– including implementing more flexible scheduling, amped up communication and more bonus incentives.”

Retail Rocks Inside NYC’s Outer Boroughs

April 14, 2009

By Michael Gleason, WorkInRetail.com Contributor

Take Manhattan… pleeeze. When it comes to shopping… most native New Yorkers seldom venture onto Gotham’s famous island, preferring to shop closer to home. That goes for retail workers too, many of whom shun the traffic and crowds of a Manhattan work week in favor of the multitude of retail shopping venues dotting the outer boroughs: Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. Together, they contain over 80% of the city’s population: at 7.5 million, more consumers than the cities of Los Angeles and Chicago combined.

Outer borough shopping encompasses big city retail employment magnets like Downtown Brooklyn, suburban-style job meccas like Staten Island Mall, and numerous one-of-a-kind shopping options — like the “upscale” Chinatown in Flushing, Queens. Along with such retail diversity come plenty of job opportunities… for sales clerks and retail cashiers… stock handlers and bookkeepers… and in shortage control and retail management.

Dressing for Success in the Retail Workplace

October 12, 2008

By Michael Gleason, WorkInRetail.com Contributor

Forget the old adage, “you are what you eat.” Now, more than ever, people are judged by what they wear. That’s doubly true in the apparel savvy retail industry. From the selling floor to the buying office, retail is face to face. That means constantly remaking a good impression.

What to wear to work? It’s an unsettling question. These days most retailers have dress codes of one sort or another. For those that don’t — and even for those that do — a good rule of thumb is often “dress like the boss.” It’s the best way to visually identify yourself as part of the team.
